When I was a little girl, my grandmother would mostly watch films about faith and the Christian message about trusting in the power of God. Although I was a child I received messages that meant to move me much better when I heard it in songs or visually by stage plays, movies and then television.
Did I forget to tell you that in the beginning we did not have electricity? When we did, to us Television was a rich man’s device. Gosh, I was amazed at the technology.
I was a Deep South southern girl with dreams and I was full of ambition. I loved the arts.
There is one film that stands out and that is “The Ten Commandments” featuring Charleston Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as The Pharoah. The dynamics between these two actors made my young mind believe that God was going to rain down fire upon our heads if we sinned.
Today, we’re living in an amazing time where films about faith are well received by cross over mainstream audiences. The movies are so powerful, many people leave the theaters wanting more. Recently Faith based organizations has been forming to bring filmmakers together who are interested in filling this amazing niche. I ran into one of the producers with “The Kendrick Brothers” when I was doing a book signing in Albany, Georgia several years ago. They were filming their hit movie, “Fire Proof”.
After that I was asked to help promote an amazing film that was coming to the churches in Birmingham, Alabama called, “The Passion Of The Christ” featuring Mel Gipson. What a movie that was!
I was totally amazed when I was asked to go see “Courageous” by the Kendrick Brothers. Later, I was asked to go see “October Baby” by the Erwin Brothers.
Now we see the rising fame of The Erwin Brothers and the Kendrick Brothers, with their films reaching amazing heights and drawing in crowds that are filling movie theaters with a large crowd from mainstream and church communities.
IN 2008 Barry Landis (Ribbow Media Group) decided to start an organization called, FAITH IN FILMS” in Nashville.
There are over 4,000 FAITH IN FILMS members in several states. There are chapters in Atlanta, Nashville, Los Angeles, New York and most recently Birmingham, Alabama. We can enjoy great friends, conversation, learn from others about filmmaking, encourage and inspire others, all at the FAITH IN FILMS BREAKFAST CLUBS.
