As Executive Producer for Darkness To Light Films, I am drawn to tell true life stories. Whether documentaries, feature film or television. True life stories captures my attention.
The demand to tell true life stories of crimes has grown. Major motion picture and television production companies, as well as independent producers, embrace this genre.
There are five reasons that producers focus on telling true life stories:
Stories about true life situations…
1. Give a “voice to the voiceless”. Talented filmmakers can take a story that’s mere fodder for the 6 o’clock local news, and turn it into a dramatic television segment or movie that grabs and keeps the attention viewers.
2. Provide creative license for filmmakers who take the liberty of adding elements that make a story more appealing.
3. Bring audiences into a world outside their comfort zone. As strange as it may sound, audiences sometimes find the pain to others to be entertaining.
4. Resonate worldwide — even if the story occurred in a small local community. Savvy filmmakers and movie producers realize that every community in the world has a story. Crafting true stories properly can attract the right partners, can lead to tremendous success.
5. The demand for nonfiction and/or “loosely” defined fiction based on fact, has never been greater.
Three things can happen when filmmakers tell true stories:
1. They can shed light on injustices that move the audience to become involved in advocacy.
2. Elevate the status of the survivor. This higher platform can help the victim continue to have a voice.
3. Create the opportunity for the development of books and stage plays. Just as books can be turned into films, films can be molded into other creative works.
I am currently in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a movie my company is producing called,”The Prayer”. I need your support. Please consider supporting this campaign financially. If you cannot help with funds, please share on your social media sites.
